Eido trimaculella

Ottawa (Dunrobin), ON Canada

28 June 2005   8:14PM EST

My identification of Eido trimaculella is based on Hodges, Ronald W., in Dominick, R.B. et al., The Moths of America North of Mexico, Fascicle 6.2, Gelechioidea: Oecophoridae (in part) (London: E.W. Classey, 1974) and on Forbes, William T.M., The Lepidoptera of New York and Neighboring States, Primitive Forms, Microlepidoptera, Pyraloids, Bombyces (Ithaca, New York: Cornell University, 1923).

Eido trimaculella has a sharply pointed forewing heavily shaded in brownish gray, with whitish overlay.  Hodges (1974) comments that there is variation in the overlay of white on the wing, some specimens being dark chocolate brown while others are pale grayish brown.  In the specimen illustrated above, there are traces of darker gray spots in the inner half of the wing and again at about the mid-point of the wing.  The outer margin is whitish.  The whitish fringe appears to have a fine dark gray-brown line in the fringe parallel to the dark gray-brown terminal line, and lengthwise stripes of dark gray brown, with two heavier dark markings adjacent to the costa.  The hindwing is dark gray-brown.  Hodges (1974) indicates a forewing length ranging from 5 to 8 mm; Forbes (1923) indicates a wingspan of 13 mm.

According to Hodges (1974), the larva of Eido trimaculella has been reared from bracket fungi. He indicates an adult flight season from early June through July.

My only record to date for Eido trimaculella (each date representing "the night of") is in the table below:
