My thanks to Dr. P.T. Dang of the Canadian Forest Service for identifying this moth from the actual specimen illustrated in the bottom photo above.

Hedya chionosema, also known as Twin-Spotted Budworm, is one of three species of Hedya known to occur in the Ottawa area.  The forewing is brownish gray, crossed by two dark brown bands.  At the costa between these bands, there is a prominent white patch.  At the back end of the thorax, there is a roughly triangular raised black tuft of scales.  The wing length is in the order of 8 mm.

I have no information on larval host plant or life cycle for Hedya chionosema.

I have photographed this species in 2003, on 15 and 20 July.
