Epinotia zandana is one of about 25 species of Epinotia that have been recorded
from the Ottawa area. My thanks to Dr. Jean-François Landry of
Agriculture Canada for identifying the four specimens illustrated above, which
were collected and given to the Canadian National Collection in Ottawa.
These
specimens have also been included in the All Leps Barcode of Life project of the
Biodiversity Institute of Ontario at the University of Guelph. Some
additional information has been gleaned from Internet resources and from Brown,
R.L. (1986), "Resurrection of Catastega Clemens and revision of the Epinotia
vertumnana (Zeller) species-group (Tortricidae: Olethreutinae)," J.
Lep. Soc., vol. 40, no. 4, pp. 327-346.
The forewing of Epinotia zandana is described by Brown
(1986) as dark grayish brown peppered with a variable number of white or
white-tipped scales. In some specimens (for example, top left and bottom
right photos), the white scales form a lengthwise sinuous line from the base,
approaching the inner margin at about one-third and two-thirds the length of the
wing. Some specimens have narrow brown subbasal and median fasciae, with
the median fascia interrupted so that its lower end forms a triangular spot near
the anal angle. Some specimens have a brown longitudinal streak,
continuous or interrupted, from base to apex. Some sense of the variable
appearance of this species can be gained from the photos above; Epinotia
zandana is not a species that should be identified on the basis of
appearance alone. Brown (1986) indicates a forewing length ranging from
6.0 to 8.5 mm.
Brown (1986) indicates hawthorn as the larval host plant for Epinotia
zandana, and gives the adult flight season in southern Ontario and Quebec as
24 March to 29 April.
My records to date for Epinotia zandana (each date
representing "the night of") are in the table below: |
