Ottawa (Dunrobin), ON Canada 22
July 2003
10:19PM EST My thanks to Dr. P.T. Dang of the Canadian Forest
Service for identifying this moth from the actual specimen pictured above. Archips
fervidana is one of a dozen or so species of Archips known to
occur in the Ottawa area. The forewing is mainly orangish and gray,
with a median band of orange that includes two dark brown blotches, one near
the costa and the other larger blotch near the inner margin. Beyond
this median band, there is a band of dark gray followed by several gray
lines near the apex. The fringe is dirty beige in color. Covell
(1984) indicates a wingspan of 1.8 to 2.5 cm for this species. According
to Covell (1984), Archips fervidana is known commonly as the Oak
Webworm moth, and its larvae feed on hickory and oak. I have
photographed this species on one date only, in 2003 on 22 July. |
