15 June 2003 9:37PM EST (right) My initial
identification of this species was based on Covell (1984) and subsequently
checked against specimens in the Canadian National Collection in Ottawa,
thanks to the kindness of Dr. J. Donald Lafontaine in arranging access to
this resource. Amorbia humerosana has a pale gray forewing,
somewhat mottled, and usually showing a darker gray, poorly defined,
triangular area extending inward from the costa. The area along to the
inner margin is mostly shaded with brown, although in some specimens this
shading is quite faded as in the specimen at right above. The entire
forewing is flecked with black. According to Covell (1984), the
wingspan ranges from 2.1 to 3 cm, making this one of our larger tortricid
species. The larvae of Amorbia humerosana feed on a wide
variety of plants, including alder, apple, huckleberry, pine, poison ivy,
and sumac (Covell, 1984). I have photographed this species in
2001, on 21 and 23 May, and on 4 and 12 June; in 2002, on 31 May; in 2003,
on 30 May, and on 15 and 27 June. |
