25 May 2003 10:37PM EDT (bottom right) Condica
vecors is one of two species of Condica known to occur in the
Ottawa area, and from my own observation, it is the more common of the two
at my location.
Condica vecors, sometimes called the Dusky
Groundling, has forewings mottled in dark brown and black. The
antemedial and postmedial lines are discernible as discontinuous dark brown
lines, with a line of whitish dots sometimes visible along the outer edge of
the pm line. The terminal line is usually marked with whitish dots.
The orbicular spot is not at all obvious, but the lower half of the reniform
spot is filled with white and the reniform spot is also sometimes partially
defined by a brownish to whitish outline. The hindwing is darkish
gray-brown with a light, whitish fringe.
The host plant for the larvae of Condica vecors is
apparently unknown. According to Handfield (1999) the adult's main
flight season in my general area is from the last 10 days of May until the
end of June, with a partial second generation flying from late July to late
August. At my location, however, the first flight season seems to
begin about mid-May, and I have not yet observed this species in July or
August.
I have photographed this species in 2000 on 2 June; in 2002,
on 16, 17, 28, 29 and 31 May; in 2003, on 18, 19, 25, 27, 28 and 30 May, and
on 4, 5, 10, 13, 14, 16 and 18 June. |
