Both photographs are of the same specimen.
My thanks to Dr. J. Donald Lafontaine of Agriculture Canada for confirming my identification of the specimen
illustrated above, which was collected and given to the Canadian National
Collection in Ottawa.
Apharetra dentata has a soft purplish gray forewing
with some darker gray and brownish shading. The scalloped antemedial line
is black, preceded by pale gray. A line of black appears to extend outward
from near the midpoint of the am line to form a partial outline for the lower
end of the orbicular spot. The reniform spot similarly has a black line at
its lower end. The somewhat jagged postmedial line is black, with some
pale gray to white along its outer edge. The subterminal area has paler
gray patches along the outer margin near the apex, and at the anal angle.
The hindwing is yellowish gray.
According to Handfield (1999), the host plant for Apharetra
dentata is reported to be blueberry. Handfield indicates an adult flight season from
mid-July to early September for my general area.
My sole record to date for Apharetra dentata (each date
representing "the night of") is in the table below: |
