Lacinipolia anguina is one of seven species of Lacinipolia that have been recorded from the Ottawa area (J.D. Lafontaine, pers. comm., 2001), of which six are illustrated on this website. My thanks to Mr. J. T. Troubridge and Dr. J. Donald Lafontaine of Agriculture Canada for identifying the specimen illustrated at top left, and for confirming my identification of the other two specimens shown above, all of which were collected and given to the Canadian National Collection in Ottawa.

Lacinipolia anguina has a gray forewing shaded with darker gray, gray-brown and reddish brown shading.  The basal area is predominantly gray, followed by a slightly scalloped, double antemedial line traced in black with pale gray filling.  The median is darker gray somewhat shaded with gray-brown.  A small black crescent appears to mark the location of the outer end of a claviform spot, often accompanied by some reddish brown shading.  The orbicular spot is somewhat elongated, angled slightly outward at its lower end, outlined in black and filled with gray.  The reniform spot is outlined in black along its inner edge, with reddish brown fill in the inner half; the outer half is pale gray, and the lower end appears to touch and blend into the postmedial line.  In the subterminal area, there is some dark gray shading near the costa between the pm line and the subterminal line. Just above the anal angle, a short black dash extends from the outer margin to (and sometimes through) the subterminal line, sometimes with a visible whitish mark where the st line crosses the dash.  The inner margin of the forewing is slightly concave. The hindwing is whitish to light gray, with some gray-brown shading towards the outer margin.

According to Handfield (1999), the host plant for Lacinipolia anguina is unknown. He indicates an adult flight season from about mid-April into the second half of July for my general area.

My records to date for Lacinipolia anguina (each date representing "the night of") are in the table below:
